To ensure a successful 2018 Winter Olympic Games, host nation Korea now needs to check the key issues inherent in various proposed Olympic plans technologically and in terms of policies.
This study focuses on the transport sector, reviewing the major issues related to the proposal to build a multimodal network using road, rail and air transport. It also discusses the prospect of establishing green transport and ITS systems. Suggestions made through relevant seminars have been incorporated into the results of the research conducted for this paper. The major contents of this study are as follows:
• The objectives and strategy proposed in the Bid Book as well as issues related to the infrastructure and operation plans
• The Wonju-Gangneung high-speed rail project and the rail connectivity issue related to travel time, and practical suggestions for rail transport
• Construction of the second Yeongdong Expressway and the Dongseo Expressway, as well as a road network involving expressways, national highways and provincial roads. Also, plans to improve and operate the road systems in the Alpensia and Coastal clusters
• Aviation measures, including suggestions for promoting connections between Incheon International Airport and Yangyang International Airport, and revitalizing the Yangyang airport
• Green transport and ITS systems, and related plans to control and operate traffic, provide pertinent information and promote the use of environment-friendly vehicles
Alternatives discussed in this paper are expected to be utilized as important reference materials in establishing a Foundation Plan for the PyeongChang Olympic Games.
